Best of the RNC, outside the ‘green zone’ edition

On a day that Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak and St. Paul mayor Chris Coleman declare the RNC a “great success” (”nothing burned!”), we look back at the best of the RNC, including real-life delegate quotes, police ineptitude, nonsensical signs, and bird porn. Oh, my! MORE »

Journalists on RNC policing: ‘Dark days for press freedom in the U.S.’

As crews picked up after the RNC in downtown St. Paul Friday morning, a handful of local and national journalists went to City Hall and delivered 50,000 signatures pressuring St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and the city and county attorneys to immediately release journalists who were recently arrested in connection to convention protests and to drop all charges against them. Serlin’s Café for sale, future of Payne Avenue institution uncertain

The atmosphere in Serlin’s Café on this Friday morning seems about the same as ever—lots of good food, coffee and conversation among the cramped and painted booths. But the big ‘For Sale’ sign in the window signals something different.

“We’re tired. Try working every day for years,” says co-owner Gary Halvorsen in Serlin’s prep kitchen, as he pours 2% milk over the macaroni and cheese in a well-used pan. Still, he says it with a wry grin and moves around the kitchen with the energy of a man half his fifty-nine years. “And Al [Halvorsen, Gary’s brother and co-owner] is ready to retire.” MORE »

Why send state dollars to local governments?

Dollars transferred from state government down to local governments, commonly referred to as “state aid,” is a component of the state-local fiscal system in all fifty states. This is particularly true in Minnesota, where state aid comprises 38 percent of total local government revenue. Local government dependence on state revenue is greater in only four other states. VOICES | The shameful neglect of mentally-wounded veterans

Sgt. Daniel Fanning, an Iraq war veteran, spoke passionately at the Minnesota Capitol recently, about the medical care veterans receive. Fanning served in the 1158th Transportation Company, driving trucks in Iraq. Because of the constant threat of IEDs, military transport jobs are highly stressful, and many people involved suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). MORE »

Mississippi Watershed group retools grants program, hopes to reach diverse communities

A Twin Cities watershed organization has a quarter million dollars of grant money to divvy up over the next few months, and they’re hoping groups that have traditionally not applied for funding will show up for an information meeting on Monday, September 8.

“Look at the demographics of our watershed,” explains Jenny Winkelman, Education & Outreach Coordinator for the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO), which covers portions of the cities of Minneapolis, St. Paul, Lauderdale, and St. Anthony. “We have a huge audience we’re trying to reach, many of them fairly recent immigrant communities, such as the Hmong and Somali communities. Most traditional watershed materials are produced for a literate, English-speaking audience and may miss important populations.” MORE »

Kellogg Boulevard is reserved for use by buses delivering and retrievingdelegates to the convention. It is bisected by concrete barriers, chain link fence, and barb wire. Drivers who go down the rght side of the road are shunted onto 35E unless they turn right onto College Avenue or Mulberry Street. Pedestrians cannot get through and are shunted onto a promenade along 35E.

When confronted with a line of mounted police on one side of the boulevard, the demonstrators ran around the police and spilled objects such as waste cans and newspaper racks on the street.

The mounted police regrouped and stood directly in front of the demonstrators. At this point, some buses started to leave, coming north on Kellogg from behind the gated fence.
